Beaverton Optimist Club builds a playground at John Marty Park

The Optimist Club of Beaverton, Oregon has been busy working with the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District to spruce up another park in their community. What's the best way to spruce up a park? With playground equipment, of course!

Last week, when Beaverton Optimist Club president Alan Zehntbauer sent 46 pictures of the project to me, I emailed back that I would get them on the website later in the week. He replied, "Oh, not all of them, but some of them are so darn cute."

I agree, Alan, there are some cute ones and I removed a few; but together, they tell the story. I like them all. Enjoy!

Please leave us a message to let us know which one you like the best.

The Vikings are coming!

Please click to enlarge and print.
Every year, the Abbotsford Optimist Club hosts Family Fun Days, a free activity for all ages that includes food, refreshments and entertainment. This year, the club is pleased to announce that the Vikings are returning to "Abbot's Fjord" to reclaim the land they first set foot upon last year.

These fun-loving Norsemen will initiate a friendly raid at the Trethewey House, 2313 Ware Street, Abbotsford, June 11, 2011, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. As part of the Reik Felag (travelling fellowship), they will demonstrate weapons and armour, weaving, music, food, naalbinding, metalworks and other arts and crafts and spin stories of their travels, Norse myths, and Viking tales.

Children and their parents will also enjoy treasure hunts, puzzle contests and a coloring contest.

To learn more about the Vikings, please visit www.reikfelag.org.

How's your state of mind?

A note in the Gresham Optimist Club Bulletin, The Optigraph says:
An optimist is a person who starts taking a bath when he accidentally falls into the river.
A pessimist is a person who says that 'O' is the last letter in 'zero' instead of the first letter in 'opportunity.'
Our bulletin editors offer great advice to keep you in a positive state of mind. Read more by clicking on the link PNW District Optimist Club bulletins.

Earn a banner patch. Make friends for life.

Would this patch look good on your Optimist Club banner? Of course it would; but what will look even better and provide more meaning are the four new members that this patch represents.

From now until June 30, Optimist International is offering the following incentive: Add three (3) Friends of Optimists to your Club roster and you can also add one (1) traditional member at no charge for processing and Optimist International dues between now and September 30, 2012 will be waived for that member.

What a great way to provide a sponsorship to a prospective new member!

Who is a candidate for a Friend of Optimist member? Individuals and businesses who want to support the good projects of the local Optimist Club on their own terms. For a small $100 annual commitment, they can call themselves a Friend of your Optimist Club, and then choose to attend, participate, donate - or not - as the project, idea or inspiration suits them. It's a very passive approach to creating more awareness about the movement we call Optimism.

Don't be shy. Find some more Friends of Optimists today. Earn a banner patch. Make friends for life. Download the Friend of Optimist application form here.

Oregon City Optimist Club presents the Pioneer Family Festival

While on a break at the third quarter conference, between the oratorical contests, Judi Van Cleave was willing to talk a little bit about the Oregon City Optimist Club and perhaps their biggest activity and fundraiser, Pioneer Days. Please watch the video to learn more and then check out the Pioneer Family Fun Days website and make your plans to join them on May 20-22, 2011.

What big plans are in store for your Optimist Club? Send us a video and we'll tell the world all about it. Well, at least we'll tell the District.  Thanks!

To be elected governor-elect, candidates must have completed a term of club president and lieutenant governor. It is a self-nominating process. Letters of interest should be sent to Linda Jackson.
